A Valentines Day Quotes and How to Keep your Slippers/Boots Looking New

The suede leather on our sheepskin slippers and boots can sometimes be a challenge to keep clean and maintain their gorgeous appearance.  The five tips below cover all the care aspects and should become a part of your regular maintenance.

Invest In A Brush

After daily wear, suede can take on a dull appearance. Investing in a special suede brush should be the most important thing on your list. Brushing your suede footwear will prolong its lifespan.  Suede brushes come at different prices, but as long as you have one and use it regularly, it doesn't have to be the most expensive one.

Use gentle pressure in a single direction and you will immediately notice that your shoes look so much better. It is best that you do this once a week for all the suede footwear you own. After brushing you might notice that the material appears as if it has changed colors in several areas. This is nothing to worry about for it's suede's nature to vary if it's not brushed in the same direction.

Remove Stains

Staining your favorite shoes is a nightmare! I know, my wife just did it last week but did not catch it right away. A nice, big oil stain from her shop, the kitchen.

If you catch the stain right away, the faster you act, the higher the chances are you'll completely remove the stain.  Grab a clean paper towel or a cloth and start blotting. Remove all the excess liquid and if it is a light stain, you'll only need to dry the spot. Once dry, use an eraser and brush the suede per the above.

Oil is the toughest, like my wife's shoes. The trick is plain, ole, white chalk.  Rub the chalk on the stain and leave over night, then brush it off. The chalk will pull the oil out of the suede, then brush with your suede brush. You might need to do this a couple of more times to get the stain fully.

Waterproofing

Water is one of the most damaging factors. But, if you must wear them in the rain, spray with a waterproofing spray.  The advantage of using waterproofing spray is that even when you get them wet, it's less likely for a stain to appear.

Treating Scuffs

Scuffs aren't always as scary as they appear! They are just a part of the leather where the grain has been pressed down.  Scuffs are actually much easier to remove than stains. Time to utilize that suede brush again but you will need to use a more vigorous brushing technique.  The goal is to buff up the grain of the suede leather and bring it back up.  If a brush doesn't do the trick, use a suede eraser.

Store Them Properly

Sun can fade suede. The sunlight exposure can also make this material stiffer and even shrink it in time.

The room also needs to be cool and well ventilated. Suede is a fabric that needs to breath. Don't even think about wrapping the shoes in plastic. Instead place them in a shoe box after wrapping them in paper or use dust bags. And keep your suede shoes away from heat sources - they can dry out the leather and alter the shape of the shoes.

As A Final Word

Contrary to popular opinion, suede shoes and slippers are not hard to take care of. The main problem is that people don't pay enough attention to the recommended care tips and don't want to spend time to maintain their beautiful suede footwear. However, follow the five tips above and your suede slippers and shoes will look as good as new for many seasons.
